Mourning Becomes Electra

Mourning Becomes Electra's movie Review:

"Mourning Becomes Electra," the towering trilogy by Eugene O'Neill, has long since been tagged by drama critics as a masterpiece of the modern stage—as a play of "heroic proportions," of "burning beauty" and of "spiritual and emotional strength" it scarcely behooves a film reviewer to see it as less upon the screen, which is where it was finally deposited, with much formality, at the Golden last night.

You can even watch Mourning Becomes Electra  growing in confidence as the film unfolds. An early sequence, almost entirely Nichols' invention, not only has Rosalind Russell's Lavinia following her treacherous mother Christine (Katina Paxinou) to the scene of her adulterous crimes, but the photography of these early scenes is powerfully, drawing on harsh light/dark contrasts and angular compositions to spike the power of the scenes.

I enjoyed Mourning Becomes Electra, however much the film seemed like a dubious choice for a filmed adaptation, and I say this as someone who has considered trying my hand at adapting the play myself.

Breath Interpretation

                          Samuel Beckett

Samuel Beckett known for his play which is presented Nothingness , but there is something deep meaning in the play .Breath Is shortest play of 30 to 35 seconds. here in this play there is no any dialogues, no characters, and also not no plot construction that gives you the direct meaning of play.

Modern Interpretation:

Here in this video it is about the modern society . such things which was used by human in his/her life that laying on everywhere, like diaries desk , spectacles , toys, photograph games . These all thing somehow symbolise that birth of child – child playing with toys .than cycle goes on and passing of time all things we used , but after all there is no meaning at all.

This all kinds of symbols tells us that how we can make our life . life has full of believable and unbelievable things to come , if we want to make our life than we have to turn all the bad things into good.

Postcolonial Perspective and Shashi Tharoor

Postcolonial Perspective and Shashi Tharoor:

Former Union minister Shashi Tharoor made a scathing attack on the former British empire.

Shashi Tharoor is an Indian politician, writer. Shashi Tharoor is member of parliament, he given postcolonial argument. He written a book on that 'An Era of Darkness'. He asserts that Britishers are not developers of any colonies. According to him real Thugs Of Hindustan are Britishers, in the name of free trade they are looting the Indians.

Tharoor treats colonialism as a moral phenomenon of the past, one that existed in a vacuum, while it is actually a phenomenon with an ongoing material impact on the lives of people.

Tharoor profoundly misunderstands the nature and legacy of colonialism. This issue comes up most clearly in his famous Oxford Union debate. During the debate, having skillfully dismantled the claims of his opponents, Tharoor demands a single symbolic rupee from the British as reparations for colonialism.

In making this demand, I believe that Tharoor makes a fundamental error: he separates the legacy of colonialism from its very materiality. What this means is that he treats colonialism as a moral phenomenon of the past, one that existed in a vacuum, rather than as a phenomenon with an ongoing material impact on the lives of people.

The appeal of Tharoor and his politics to liberal elites is clear. A politics of moral debt and individual action – as opposed to structural oppression and collective struggle – allows liberals to ignore their very real part in the perpetuation of the legacy of colonialism.

Thinking Activity: The Birthday Party

The Birthday Party:

1)  Why are two scenes of Lulu omitted from the movie?
---> Its depend on directors mind where is no necessity to follow original text important is the essence of tax is remained there so doing that omitted 2 scene of Lulu still the essence or sequence order maintained by director so is it all ok.

2)
It has been said that movie always provides better understanding rather than reading .The same result with the play ‘’Birthday Party’’.In reading you may not feel the same kind of fear and menace, the fear of unknown danger ,but while watching movie remain there and as well as in the mind of audience. The menace evolves from actual violence in the play or from an underlying sense of violence throughout the play.

3)
Yes , I feel the lurking danger while viewing the movie. I feel that something will happen. when suddenly knocking happen ,feel the effect of lurking danger, but not in the text. In that newspaper it is symbolically to hide the reality.

4)
In the very beginning of the play we see the one of the old character in the play, petey is reading news paper.this news paper reading  as a technique used by many writer to hide the face,in this way hiding self from the reality.McCann  signifies the insignicant of the news paper, it also signify that petey is helpless against the two strangers, tearing out of the character.

If I am  movie maker in Indian cinema that I choose..
Stanley – Nawazuddin Siddiqui
Lulu – Radhika Apte
Goldberg – Anupam Kher
McCann – Rajkumar Rao

Thinking Activity: Waiting for Godot

Waiting for Godot:

1)- It is connected to this play because country road is symbolized homelessness and vagabond type of idea so, both characters has no home for shelter so it appropriate to this play also describing condition of that kind of people, tree is part of nature and as part of nature's cycle autumn and spring come and goes it's like universal law of nature death /birth and salvation so , we can see someway that dots connected to visualizing setting in writers view.

2)- In second act the tree grown some leaves its shows archetypal idea about life, death and reborn. nature is cycle of life.

3)-. Moon shows the light of positiveness and hope for new day come with new things and full fill our wishes of life. It also reflected meaninglessness of waiting.

4)- Debris shows the uselessness and selfishness of human after using the materials they through out side and it shows some waiting for purification.nothing is permanent in this world.

5)- The play begins with the dialogue "Nothing to be done".and also Estragon speaks that “Nothing happens, nobody comes, nobody goes, and it’s awful!”. Nothingness is main theme of this play and we can see that in this play these all characters they are doing insignificant activities meaninglessly.

Balaji Rangnathan

Postcolonial Studies:

In our department of English we have a guest lectures of Prof.  Balaji Rangnathan during 14th September to 16 September. It was very fruitful sessions for us. He came from Central university of Gujrat. He deals  with The Post Colonial literature. He very well connected post colonial concept with Indian concept.

● In three days session he deals with:

1) Black skin and white mask
2) orientalism
3) A Tempest
4) Imaginary Homeland
5) preparation for NET /SET exams

It was a great experience to study under his guidance. His knowledge over each subject, fluent English,  frank personality is noticeable things. At last he gave some important information about the preparation for GSET/NET. Where he introduced new method of cracking the exams. And yes, honestly our lack of reading made him little bit concerned because one need original reading to crack these types of major exams. But yes he invited or we can say insisted us to study further. In a nutshell I would like to thanks Dr.  Dilip Barad Sir for arranging these kinds of guest lectures.
